I felt hungover and awful the next morning. It was just as well we had the next couple of days off, as I could still feel the phall exuding itself from my skin and the thought of wearing an environmental suit and being trapped with my own smell turned my stomach.

Even having the two days of ‘downtime’ didn’t mean that I could lay in my bunk and feel awful. We still had to keep the civets busy. Besides that, as a squad leader for a squadron, I had to coordinate with the squadron leader and flight leader for our future training flights, because we had to assume as soon as they finished the ‘software diagnostic’ we would go straight back into flying.

Of course, that meant meeting with Annari, Jonna, and Kiyu, once more.

“You look awful,” Jonna told me as I arrived at the meeting room. I was a few minutes early and the others hadn’t yet arrived. “Hot date?”

“I take it you heard, then?” I growled.

She laughed, “Half the flight has heard. Congratulations, if anyone had any doubts about how stubborn and hard-headed you can be, you have disabused them of those notions. I mean, making yourself sick with phall is a new one by me as far as avoiding having to answer questions. Either a brilliant move or lucky blunder on your part.”

“Thanks,” I told her flatly. “She wasn’t just there to interrogate me, Jonna.”

I didn’t miss how she set down a scrambler on the meeting room table.

“Maybe not,” Jonna nodded as the device went on, “although it would be dangerous to assume she has only the one goal in spending time with you.”

“What do you mean by…”

I broke off as Kiyu stepped into the room. She saw the device on the table and raised an eyebrow.

“Initiate Isagani messaged me to say she would be delayed and that she would catch up with me personally later this afternoon on any plans we develop for further training flights,” Jonna told us. “I thought we might make use of the time to discuss what actually happened when those two squadrons came at us.”

Kiyu’s gaze flicked to me and back to Jonna.

“Captain Jiang stated it was a simple mistake, their simulated enemies confused with our flight, perhaps part of the software glitch that they are running a diagnostic for,” Kiyu answered in a flat voice.

“Do you believe him?” Jonna asked.

Again, Kiyu’s gaze went to me and then back to Jonna. “I suppose that is why you two have ambushed me, to find out what I know and to fill in further details.”

“I didn’t ambush you,” I told her, “I came for the flight planning meeting.”

“Perhaps that is what we should do, then?” Kiyu didn’t look over at me as she said it.

“You two…” Jonna hissed. “Look, I don’t care what issues you have with one another right now, I think we can all agree that something weird happened out there… and that we all have reasons to suspect Admiral Zarin is up to something.
